A complex wine with soft tannins and a velvety texture, our 2016 Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir opens with aromas of Rainier cherry, pomegranate, strawberry and ground cloves. Bright acidity frames the mid-palate, balanced by red fruit flavors and spice and a long, elegant finish.
We sourced the fruit for this wine from Santa Barbara County, because of its ideal conditions for growing elegant Pinot Noir with nuanced flavors. Vineyards closest to the coast in the Central Coast AVA experience cool, foggy mornings and warmer afternoons, bringing out well-developed fruit flavors and balanced acidity in the grapes. Fruit from vineyards in Sta. Rita Hills add spice and minerality to the wine. Santa Maria Valley experiences a cold and windy climate, delivering smaller yields, giving the wine its structure and tannins.
The 2016 growing season in Santa Barbara County was characterized by a warm spring and summer, with moderate temperatures leading up to harvest. The grapes were harvested ahead of the late September heatwave, preserving their delicate fruit flavors and crisp acidity. The vintage brought healthy canopies around the grape clusters, excellent color in the fruit and strong yields.
After fermentation, the wine was aged in 50% new French oak and 50% 1 & 2-Year-Old French oak.
