2014 Washington Red
Tasting NotesWinegrowing NotesWinemaking NotesTech Notes
The 2014 Washington blend has aromas of nutmeg, clove and cherry-cola spice with hints of ripe strawberries. Black cherry and cola flavors on the front of the palate are followed by red fruit flavors and well-structured tannins on the mid-palate, and a long, delicate finish.

We blended Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Malbec from the Red Mountain, Walla Walla Valley and Horse Heaven Hills appellations in Columbia Valley to create a well-balanced wine. Vines in the Red Mountain and Walla Walla Valley vineyards experience desert-like conditions in the winter and spring, when hot days are followed by cool nights thanks to cold air coming down from the nearby Blue Mountains. As a result, grapes are smaller, but have thick skins, adding complexity to the wine. The Horse Heaven Hills vineyard, planted in the same type of soil, experiences frequent winds throughout the growing season, which stresses and dries out the vines. Drip irrigation is used as a form of canopy management to produce fruit with intense flavor, giving the wine a balance of sugar and acidity. The 2014 growing season was one of the warmest on record with low rainfall and a long, warm summer which allowed the fruit to fully ripen and be picked at optimal flavors.

After fermentation, the wine was aged in 75% new American Oak and 25% 2 year-old French oak, to complement the tannins and soften the mid-palate.
